The earthquake struck in the waters off the main island of Java, about 200 kilometers south-southeast of the capital of Jakarta. The earthquake had a depth of nearly 62 kilometers.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially estimated the quake at a 7.4 magnitude, but has since downgraded it to a 7.0.

The Pacific Tsunami Center in Hawaii lifted the tsunami warning after no large waves were spotted.

The earthquake caused buildings to shake in Jakarta, sending office workers running into the streets in panic.

Several buildings collapsed in the towns of Tasikmalaya and Bandung, but there are no immediate reports of any injuries or deaths.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
