U.S. President Barack Obama has cited a new study indicating that small businesses pay nearly 20 percent more on employee health benefits than big businesses do.

In his weekly media address Saturday, Mr. Obama called the situation "unsustainable" and "unacceptable."

The new study was conducted by the White House Council of Economic Advisors. It shows that one-third of small businesses have cut benefits, while others have stopped providing coverage or have cut jobs.

Mr. Obama said his health care reform plan will change the situation for the better.

Opposition Republicans argue that his health care reforms will hurt small businesses by requiring them to provide health care for employees or face higher taxes or fines.

In the party's weekly address, Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers said the cost on small businesses will destroy millions of jobs. She called the reform plans a "prescription for disaster."

Mr. Obama said some Republican criticism has little to do with the merits of the health care proposals, but aim instead to "inflict political damage" on his administration.

Although he was not successful in getting Congress to vote on the reform bills before the August recess, he has repeatedly pledged to get the laws passed before the end of the year.
