Google offers a million free eBooks

google-books1That tie up between Sony and Google is starting to bear fruit. After Sony confirmed its new readers would support the copy–friendly EPUB, the Big G has just filled its book store with a whacking million titles slathered in the format. But are they any good, or just some oblique 19th century nonsense?

If you’re planning on rocking a new Sony Daily Edition, this one’s for you. The EPUB loving eReader can be filled with stacks of books from Google’s online library for free.

All you need to do is head to Google Books and hit the download link in the corner of your chosen book’s page. There is a catch though. These are almost entirely aging titles rather than the newest bestsellers or trashy celeb biographies you’re fond of.

That might seem a bit rubbish, but the move into EPUB really shows that the world of eBooks has learned the DRM lessons of the music industry quickly. And that means you’re far more likely to nab a Sony Reader (or a Cool-er) than you were this time last year.
