Tiger Woods moved into contention at Liberty National in New Jersey with a third-round 67 in The Barclays. The world No1 improved on his first two rounds of 72 and 70 to move to within five shots of his fellow Americans Paul Goydos and Steve Marino at the top of the leaderboard.

Birdies at the 5th, 6th and 7th set Woods up for an impressive round, and although he dropped one at the par-four 10th, two more birdies moved him to four-under for the tournament. Marino, though, claimed he would not looking over his shoulder for Woods.

"I don't think so," he said. "You know, I'm sure he's probably going to play pretty well. He always seems to play well on Sundays. But I can't control what he does. I can only control what I do and I feel like if I play well, being five ahead of him, I shouldn't really have to worry about him."

Goydos and Marino both hit 68s in the third round to lead by two from Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson, who also returned a 68, and Webb Simpson. The 24-year-old American, who headed the field after round two, slipped down the leaderboard after a 72. Steve Stricker and Heath Slocum were also well-placed at six- and five-under respectively.

Woods was one of five players on four under, including Padraig Harrington and Ian Poulter. The Irishman hit a 67, picking up five shots in the space of six holes on the back nine to finish with six birdies and two bogeys.

Poulter had to make do with a 70, ending his round with bogeys at the 16th and 18th, although he did birdie the 17th. Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar were the other two players on four under.

Greg Owen shot a six-under-par 65, but at three-under the 27-year-old Mansfield man's chances of winning the tournament are slim. Further down the field Justin Rose was one-over after a 69.
