Swine flu halves but NHS still on alert

The number of new swine flu cases has more than halved with just 5,000 cases in the past week.

The sharp fall compares to 11,000 in the previous week and over 100,000 at the beginning of the month.

But Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson warned a second wave of H1N1 virus was still expected later in the year. A total of 66 people have died after contracting the virus.

Sir Liam said: "The health service needs to be on top of its game. It is normally a mild illness but for some it continues to be very serious.

"We don't know what will happen next but our best guess is that we will get some kind of rise during our flu season."

A total of 218 people are being treated in hospital for swine flu, of which 31 are in intensive care. This is also a fall on last week's figures of 263 and 30 respectively.

The first 200,000 doses of the vaccine have now arrived. Jabs for people in at-risk groups - such as those with asthma and diabetes - are due in October.
