Thailand to start A(H1N1) flu vaccine clinical trials in September

BANGKOK, Aug 10 (TNA) – Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health will begin clinical trials of vaccines to protect humans from influenza A(H1N1) on September 6, following successful trials on laboratory animals in the Netherlands, a top Thai health official said on Monday.

The Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO) recently received the results of A(H1N1) flu tests on animals in the Netherlands which demonstrated the vaccine’s safety.

Dr Vichai Chokeviwat, chairman of the Government Pharmaceutical Organization Board, said the flu vaccine clinical trials on humans will be carried out after the GPO board meeting.

Currently some 400 volunteers have been recruited for the clinical test programme scheduled to begin on September 6.

The volunteers must have medical checkups to ensure that they are physically strong for the clinical test.

According to the public health ministry’s weekly report on August 5, Thailand has so 81 reported fatalities from Influenza Type A (H1N1). (TNA)
