Bookish | Browsing Sony’s E-Reader Editions

Sony Daily Reader -- e-readerCourtesy of Sony The Daily Reader, Sony’s answer to the Kindle.

Sony just unveiled its much-anticipated digital Daily Reader, which boasts 3G wireless capabilities and a touch screen in order to compete in an e-reader industry dominated by the Kindle. But the Daily Reader won’t be available until December. What if you need your digital book fix and you need it now? Calm down: Sony also offers a Pocket Edition and a Touch Edition, and you can buy them after you finish this sentence.

Both the Pocket and Touch editions can be read either vertically or horizontally (perfect for displaying pictures and graphics). But while the Pocket Edition has the lower price ($199), the Touch provides a more intuitive experience. A flick of the finger across the screen turns the pages, and upon touching a particular word, a dictionary function pops up to provide the Oxford-approved definition.

On the content front, Sony has brokered a deal allowing e-reader titles to be downloaded from multiple retailers, including OverDrive, a distributor of e-books to libraries (including the New York Public Library). Unfortunately, you still can’t download George Orwell’s “1984.”
