The wildfire burns behind a home in the exclusive community of La Canada Flintridge
A huge mushroom cloud of smoke rose above the landmarks of Los Angeles yesterday, covering parked cars in ash and leaving a bitter taste in the air, as a wildfire raged out of the control in mountains above the city.
Amid a late summer heat wave the fire tripled in size, burning more than 20,000 acres of the Angeles National Forest and threatening 10,000 homes.
More than 1,800 firefighters are battling the flames in triple-digit temperatures. They reported that the blaze was spreading in all directions, and that it would take more than a week ”at least" to bring under control.
Meanwhile, damage from the fire cut out electricity to parts of the city.
So far, three civilians have suffered burns while reportedly defending their homes, and have been airlifted to safety.
The areas affected by the blaze include foothill suburbs such as Big Tujunga Canyon, La Canada Flintridge, Glendale, and Altadena.
Another wildfire was also raging near Los Angeles yesterday, in the San Bernardino National Forest.
