Cheng Bock says he would have stood a better chance in straight fight

SINGAPORE - Presidential candidate Dr Tan Cheng Bock, 71, said that if it was down to a two-horse race between him and Dr Tony Tan - who was elected as President this morning - he would have stood a better chance of winning.

Said Dr Tan Cheng Bock: "I'll stand a much, much better chance because those who voted for Jee Say and Kin Lian would have voted for me."

Describing how close the fight was, Dr Tan Cheng Bock said that when 80 per cent of the votes were counted, both him and Dr Tony Tan were neck to neck. It was in the final lap, when the votes from Sembawang - where Dr Tony Tan previously represented as a Member of Parliament - were counted which gave the former Deputy Prime Minister a push towards the finishing line.

Dr Tan Cheng Bock said he believed many in the PAP had voted for him, especially those in the grassroots.

On Dr Tony Tan's 35.2-per-cent mandate, Dr Tan Cheng Bock said the President-elect has got a lot of work to do and that the ruling party will need to look critically at the results and what it means.

Turning to his campaign, Dr Tan Cheng Bock felt that he and his team put up a dignified fight. He said: "I told my men not to be discouraged, we also won. We did not have all these endorsements..but we did it. We have conducted a very well-planned campaign."

The highest accolade came from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong himself this morning, said Dr Tan Cheng Bock. He added: "PM called to compliment my election campaign. He said we ran a well-dignified campaign. He was quite impressed."
