Toshiba upgrades TG01 with Windows Mobile 6.5

Toshiba TG01 Windows Phone

After a long time the Toshiba TG01 is back in news. Toshiba recently announced a new variant of the TG01 featuring Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system.

TG01 users can now enjoy a new homescreen and a finger-friendly start menu. The latest Windows based handset makes navigation easier and faster. Further, with the Windows Marketplace for Mobile, downloading and installing Windows Mobile applications including games, social networking functions and office-tools can be personalized easily. Browsing the web is now made faster with the latest version of Internet Explorer. The free Microsoft My Phone facilitates users to protect their phone with data backup and secure sharing of photos with PC, phone or web-based platform.

“Windows phones bring together the best of the Web, the PC and the phone so you can connect instantly to the people and information you care about, no matter where you are. The new TG01 Windows phone provides a great end-to-end experience that spans your entire life, at work and at home,” quoted Stephanie Ferguson, general manager, product management, Microsoft Corp.

Similar to the original TG01, the Windows phone is equipped with Snapdragon 1GHz processor that offers smooth video playback, rapid gaming and detail-rich browsing. The device boasts of a 4.1-inch wide-VGA (800 x 480) touchscreen display along with an on-board Coreplayer that supports a range of video formats. The sleek phone measures 70mm x 130mm x 9.9mm and weighs about 129 grams. The handset sports a 3.2 mega-pixel camera with auto-focus functionality.

We’ve been thrilled with the market’s response to the TG01 handset so far and worked closely with Microsoft to launch one of the first Windows phones to the market. Toshiba is constantly striving to deliver the very best mobile experience and we are excited what this new Windows phone update will bring our customers, with an improved user interface and access to a multitude of applications through Windows Marketplace,” stated Hidehito Koka, Deputy Managing Director, Toshiba Information Systems UK Ltd, Mobile Communications Division.

The Toshiba phone supports H.263, H.264, MPEG4, WMV and ASF video formats along with MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, AMR-NB, WMA audio formats. It delivers a talktime of up to 4 hours and standby time of around 220 hours for 3G devices. The Windows Mobile driven device presents GPS and A-GPS capabilities. The TG01 incorporates 256MB RAM and 512MB ROM and also supports a micro SDHC slot of up to 32GB.

The TG01 Windows phone will hit the European markets beginning October 6, 2009. The existing TG01 handset users can be upgraded to the new Windows Mobile 6.5, free of charge.
