Tiger Woods fired a course-record 62 at Cog Hill to take complete control of the BMW Championship with one round left to play.

Having started the day in a tie for the lead with Mark Wilson, the world number one finished it with a seven-shot cushion after a superb nine-under round.

Woods' record-breaking efforts, which included a stunning eagle at the par-five ninth, left him on 16 under par for the tournament.

Fellow American Brandt Snedeker and Marc Leishman of Australia are his closest challengers on nine under. Matt Kuchar and Padraig Harrington, who signed for a 69, are a further shot adrift.

Early bogey

However, it appears the field are playing for second place after Woods recovered from a bogey at the first to lower the course best by one.

His spectacular efforts also equalled the tournament record set by compatriot Jim Furyk at Bellerive last year.

"After I got past the first hole I was doing all right," Woods said. "It was one of those days that kind of built upon itself.

"I've always liked it, this course. I played here even as an amateur in the old Western Open. I've always felt comfortable playing this golf course."

Snedeker did all he could to close the gap, closing his round of 66 with four straight birdies. He had managed back-to-back 69's on the first two days.

Difficult

"Looks like Tiger is making it difficult on us," he said afterwards. "I'm playing fantastic. And the best thing is I fought extremely well out there."

Leishman managed a 68 but overnight leader Wilson moved the wrong way on the leaderboard, a level-par 71 leaving him in a tie for sixth.

Furyk is just behind on six under, the same score Bubba Watson, Englishman Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia of Spain, the latter two having both carded scores of 68.

Ian Poulter sits a shot further back while Phil Mickelson is on three under after only managing 71 on Saturday in Illinois.
